Her first kiss

3 Apr

(click to embiggen) "The sun was setting when she finally arrived home." First line provided by speakeay #102 winner Sandra Crook

The sun was setting when she finally arrived home. She stretched her arms above her head and yawned, peering from the side of her eyes at the man driving the van. She rubbed at her eyes, trying to not draw his attention to the gritty flakes falling from lack of sleep. They had spent hours laying on the roof of the van, fingers entwined, legs overlapping.

They didn’t want the day to end so kept making up stories to keep the other’s attention, finally slowly accepting defeat when church bells rang, echoing into their hideway in the trees.

So many hours spent talking about nothing and now this tension between them. Neither of them knew what to say now that the magic of the spring day had ended. What do you say when you don’t want to break the spell, but you want the spell to be reignited again? And again and again.

“That’s my house there,” she said, pointing to a sunshine yellow bungalow ahead.

He said nothing.

“I had fun today,” she tried again.

Still he said nothing.

He pulled into her driveway and she awkwardly gathered her belongings- her purse, a shoe that had been dangling from her foot, an earring carelessly resting on the dashboard.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

He wrapped his hands around her shoulders and pulled her close, kissing her with lips and a tongue that had done this before.

She cautiously responded, learning the steps as he led.

A door slammed and a shadowed figure stood in the doorway of the cheerful house.

“I’ll see you again,” he said as she ran out of car and barefoot onto the grass to her father’s imposing figure.

“I’ll see you again,” he whispered again to himself.

Little did they know that many years after that first kiss, children would be playing among the tangled weeds surrounding the van they first rode in together- children that came from other kisses along their life’s journey.
