Literary Junkie

16 Apr

I have always been a reader. I used to read constantly. In fact, I read in the car so often that when I got my driver’s license, I didn’t remember how to get home from the mall! So, when the Literary Junkies group was brought to my attention, I couldn’t help but join their bandwagon. Nothing makes me feel more at ease than being lost in a book.

I am currently reading The Tender Bar, by J.R. Moehringer. I started a book club in my office and my boss chose this book. It is a fairly dry memoir which a lot of my coworkers found difficult to read, but she is the boss so nobody would disagree. Essentially, it is the story of a man who grew up without his father so he turned to a local bar and the men who were regulars there for guidance. While it is definitely not a book that has you itching to get home so you can read some more, it doesn’t have me giving up on finishing it altogether.

Two books that recently did have my hooked from start to finish were Defending Jacob by William Landay and The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. If you haven’t read these yet, please go pick them up. You won’t regret it!

Thank goodness for my Kindle or I would have nowhere to keep them all!

Reading Habits
Amazon or brick and mortar? Amazon- they closed the book store near my office, otherwise I would be spending most lunch breaks there.
Locally owned bookshop or big name chain store? Whatever is most convenient
Bookmark or dog-ear? Dog-ear
Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random? I try to group by author, but I have so many it would be a project to alphabetize.
Keep, throw away, or sell? Give away. I give to my friends or leave in my building lobby for my neighbors to take old books.
Keep dust jacket or toss it? Keep
Read with dust jacket or remove it? Remove
Short story or novel? Novel
Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)? Collection
Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks? I sometimes will keep reading until I finish!
“It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”? Once upon a time…
Buy or borrow? Buy, should be better about borrowing though. Kindle makes it so easy to spend money without thinking. I’ve also given away a couple hundred every time I have moved. Books are not fun to move!
New or used? New- old books creep me out. Someone read that while picking their nose or sitting on the toilet.
Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse? Reviews and recommendations
Tidy ending or cliffhanger? Tidy ending
Morning, afternoon or nighttime reading? All of the above!
Single volume or series? Series
Favorite series? I can’t pick one!
Favorite book of which nobody else has heard? What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge- it is a children’s book 🙂

What are you reading now? What should I read next? The next Literary Junkies choice is Diamond in the Rough by Shawn Colvin. Have you read it?
