History of a friendship

9 Apr

This is the story of how I met my best friend.

It was freshman orientation. The year was 1997 and the style was, well, pathetic. My mom and I showed up to the school and took the tour, met some teachers and then mingled. She was with her mom, too. She told me she had not gone to the public middle school like the majority of new freshman and knew almost no one.

“I’ll be your friend,” I said in typical me fashion.
“Okay,” she replied.

On the way home she told her mom about our conversation.

“I’d be careful with anyone that eager to make friends,” her mom said.

We’ve been best friends ever since. I’m just friendly, not desperate. Geez.

We have not lived in the same state since high school. We both went to out of state colleges and moved after graduation. However, our friendship has remained consistent. We have a history together that distance doesn’t shake. Even when I lived in Florida and she lived in New York, we saw each other more than I saw some people who only lived 20 minutes away. We’ve been lucky, but we  don’t take the friendship or our history for granted.

How did you meet your best friend?
