Marathon Monday

15 Apr

Marathon Monday. It’s a holiday the rest of the country doesn’t celebrate. In fact, it’s a holiday the rest of the state doesn’t celebrate (they call it Patriot’s Day), but here in Boston we, or at least most of us, get the day off from work. This is the day the Boston Marathon comes to town and the city is literally overrun with people sporting blue jackets- and later tinfoil capes.

I’ve never run the Boston Marathon (which you probably already guessed if you read this post), but I know many people who have and to them I say thank you. Thank you for giving me a reason for a three-day weekend.

My dad is actually one of those people who has run the marathon. He did it first as a bandit runner. This means that he just jumped in at the starting line and hoped he wasn’t picked off by the marathon officials by the time he reached the end (he is a cop- they think they can get away with these things…and they usually do). The second time he ran he did it legitimately and raised money for his favorite charity. He finished both times. Yay Dad!

If you don’t run the marathon, but still want to participate in the festivities, there are a couple of options for you. Many people go to the Red Sox game that day. Fenway is only a short walk from the runners’ path and it is good timing to go to the day game and then watch the final runners finish. I’ve done this a couple of times. My boyfriend is going this year. His work gave him the day off, but then mandated everyone go to the game. Day off = forced coworker time. Go figure.

Last year was so hot that runners were able to defer their entries. I was hot walking from the train to my friend’s party across the park, so I can’t imagine running 26.2 miles in that heat. Overachievers.

I have not decided yet what I am going to do today. Depending on the weather, I might venture into the city with friends to watch people exert themselves while I drink a beer or two. Otherwise, I might just enjoy being in a part of the city that is calm and empty for once. Either way, I won’t be sitting at my cubicle. And for that, I thank marathon runners everywhere!

Happy Patriot’s Day Marathon Monday!

Today was Day Thirteen (or Day M) of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

Update: Everyone I know who was attending or running in the marathon is safe. Thoughts and prayers to those impacted by this sad event.

I’ve been in the area for just over 2 years now, and so far have not had ANY desire to be involved in the Marathon. 🙂

Yah, I’m still in my pajamas. I won’t be venturing into the masses today. So crazy!

I miss Patriot’s Day! It’s my second Patriot’s Day away from Massachusetts. And I loved getting a random holiday off that no one else acknowledged. (I especially loved it when I was a teacher in the city of Boston, and also got Evacuation Day off…. Do they still even have that???) In my more than a decade living in the Boston area, I only went to the marathon two or three times. That was enough.

Yes! Schools still get Evacuation Day off although my office didn’t close. I did take a personal day from work just in case I had too much fun on St. Patrick’s day though 🙂

One of my best friends lives in Boston as well and is always talking about Marathon Day. Enjoy the craziness and good luck to all the runners!

I joined marathons twice and walked through 90% of them both times. I can’t run, I get a stitch on my side.

I am amazed at anyone that can run marathons – even half marathons or 5K races! I suck at running and unless I am watching a tv show on my iphone, I can barely make it through a 30 minute run!

Run a marathon? Maybe to the wine store.

  7. Danielle April 15, 2013 at 2:19 pm #

How fun! Not running, but watching them all finish sounds like it would be fun. I like cheering people on. After all that running, I’m sure they appreciate it too! Have a good day off!

When I hear Patriots…and Boston…I think of the New England Patriots…and being a Giants fan…and beating them in the Superbowl twice already…I smile. Sorry I know this has nothing to do with what you wrote about…but it’s just what came to mind. Thanks for sharing…and I’m with you…no running…just relax and enjoy the three day weekend.

You get the day off for the marathon? Awesome! I would totally eat a huge bowl of ice cream in front of the runners, lol! Maybe that’s too mean… 😉

    • Another Clean Slate April 15, 2013 at 2:51 pm #

People are drinking and eating all along the runner’s path. I am sure they want to steal some ice cream cones along the way 🙂

What a great “holiday”. I’d be the supporters cuz I can’t see myself running the marathon at the moment. –Happy A-Z’ing! Yay, we’re at the half way mark!

I like it: I might watch people exert themselves while I have a beer or two. I’ll take a Stout, stat. HAHAH.

I’m sorry your post had to happen on such a sad day, glad that your family is OK. And still want to give a shout out to your dad, I can’t run a block!

  17. Maria Smith (@mariaAsmith) April 15, 2013 at 6:28 pm #

I hadn’t heard of this marathon before, but then I’m no runner! The only marathons I do are the ‘cake’ eating type.

Great that people want to do it though… 😉

  18. Elliot B. April 15, 2013 at 6:35 pm #

This was a really good topic. I’m glad to read your family is ok. My thoughts go out to anyone affected by this tragedy.

Kat ~ I hope that your friends are okay. I’m just getting to post and I wanted to stop by and let you know that we here are praying for the families and friends of those injured and hurt from the explosions. What a horrible thing. Wish we could just rid ourselves of these crazy people.

I just caught up with the nasty news, my thoughts are with you and all affected

    • Another Clean Slate April 16, 2013 at 9:09 am #

Thank you, Ida- such a terrible thing to happen on what is supposed to be such a great day here in Boston.

I read your post early on Monday, before I had heard the news of the bombs. I didn’t take the time to comment then, but wanted you to know that, until I read your post, I wasn’t at all familiar with the marathon. I’d never heard of Patriot Day, either. Even though the post was lighthearted, I could tell that you genuinely respect the tradition and the “overachievers” who participate.
I hope you, your family and friends are doing okay.

    • Another Clean Slate April 18, 2013 at 9:52 am #

Thanks for thinking of me. I considered taking the post down, but it had been written and posted well before the events of Monday occurred and I didn’t think it would be offensive to keep it up. Thankfully, I don’t yet know anyone who has been personally impacted by the event beyond the sadness that everyone is feeling. Although my friend who was running it for the fifth time was only a 1/2 mile from the finish line when it occurred- its scary to think about those things. Thanks again for coming back to this post.

I love hearing what you have to say! Give it to me...
