Happy Easter- from my couch to yours!

31 Mar

Hope everyone enjoyed their Easter. I am sitting at home plugging away on my new MacBook Air, which we finally got. I am loving it so far although never owning a Mac has allowed for a slight learning curve.

We woke up bright and early this morning and headed to Mass with my boyfriend’s sisters. I really enjoyed the church we went to- I felt the sense of community from the moment we walked through the door. I wish I could find a place like that closer to where I live. We then spent the day at his mom’s house. I am finally feeling a bit more like myself, although I was teased all day about my nose being rubbed completely raw. Ouch!

So, as I said, I am now here on my own, lounging on my couch in a big comfy T-shirt, watching TV shows from my DVR and just relaxing. Really exciting way to spend my last night in my 20s, but  I am happy so who cares!

Here are this week’s Sunday Social questions-

  1. Favorite type of work out to do? I like doing hot yoga, but it takes some doing to motivate myself to get my butt to a studio. It’s also not cheap! My favorite “work out” is just calling up a friend and having her meet me for a walk- when the weather is nicer of course. It’s almost that time of year!
  2. Favorite guilty pleasure candy or sweet? Currently I have Girl Scout cookies in my freezer, so that is about all I can think of on the spot. They are calling my name…
  3. What is one thing you continuously forget to do?  I always forget to pick up prescriptions so I am stuck running to get them the day I take the last of the prior month. Or maybe I am just too lazy to walk to the pharmacy until it is absolutely necessary!
  4. Posts its or phone reminders? Why? I usually don’t use either, although I totally rely on an old-fashioned wall calendar for my social agenda.
  5. Favorite picture currently on your phone that always makes you smile? The latest photo making me smile is one my friend sent of her puppy telling me to”Feel better.” He is my honorary nephew!

Don’t forget, tomorrow kicks off the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge!

From A to Zzzz….

29 Mar

I had joked that I didn’t get sick this winter because my boyfriend was sick often enough that it was like my own personal flu shot every time we kissed. I spoke too soon. I made it through winter, but it appears it wasn’t in the cards to skip being sick altogether. I’ll spare you the details, but let’s just say things aren’t pretty and that I’m hoping my coworkers aren’t cringing from their cubicles. Trust me, if I had a choice, I wouldn’t be here.

This wonderful surprise just happened to pop up at the most inconvenient time. I better recover by tomorrow for a number of reasons.

First of all,  I’m going to my boyfriend’s house for Easter. This will be the second time I meet his mom and I’m not sure I want this follow-up impression to be me heavy lidded and sniffling while the ham gets carved.

Secondly, my 30th birthday is on Monday. The aging process has done its duty enough, thank you very much Mr. Cold. I have friends traveling in for my big “surprise” bash next weekend. There is NO way I want to be sick for the main event.

Last but not least, Monday begins the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge. How will I keep up with the veteran bloggers if my brain is foggy?

The Blogging from A to Z April Challenge kicks off on April 1 (my birthday- woohoo!). Every day except Sundays for the month of April, a post must be written using a word starting with a consecutive letter of the alphabet as the hook. Did I explain that right? Monday has to be about something starting with “A,” Tuesday with the letter “B” and so on and so forth. If it doesn’t make sense blame the unicorns tap dancing in my head- or the cold medicine- then check the challenge’s Web site for a clearer description.

Wish me luck… and a quick recovery!

Take my advice, you need it

28 Mar

Dear 16-year-old me,

I bet you figure you will have all the answers by the time you are my age. Think again. You are just as clueless at 29 as you were at 21 and as you are at 16. In fact, I’m beginning to think you’ll never have the answers. The difference is that I accept that fact. However, there are some tidbits of advice I can give you- not that you’ll listen.

  • Save your money. That purse is going to go out style, but that debt lasts a lifetime (or at least it will feel that way).
  • Try to go a little easier on your mom. She is trying and whether you believe it or not, you’ll be very close in only a couple of years.
  • Some friends aren’t meant to be in your life forever. Accept them for what they mean to you at the time.
  • Some friends are meant to be in your life forever. Be good to them. You’ll need them.
  • You’re a strong person. Don’t doubt that.
  • It’s okay to say no if someone proposes to you. In fact, I strongly encourage it. It won’t work out. Just trust me on this one.
  • That metabolism won’t last forever. Try to get into a habit of running now or I doubt it will ever become something you enjoy.
  • For goodness sake, lay off the Sun In!

Your older and not quite wiser self

Just wanted to say, I am grateful for all of you reading my posts. It’s been two weeks since I started writing this thing and I woke up this morning to a total of over 1,000 page views and 200 followers on Twitter. Now I know that is all in an hour’s work for a lot of blogs out there, but this newbie is definitely feeling the love- real or imagined. So thank you!

Shower me with cupcakes and make my day complete

27 Mar

Over the last few weeks, I have attended and helped plan a couple of wedding showers- a traditional bridal shower and a Stock the Bar party. Both were a lot of fun, but obviously very different.

Image  Image Image

The Stock the Bar was for both the bride and groom and hosted at a close friend’s home here in Boston. Since they couple is from down south, they already had showers there as well. I had never attended a shower where men were present, but I have to admit, it definitely made things a lot more interesting- and I laughed far more than you would expect at a wedding shower. While the gifts were not the cliche registry gifts (they revolved around… wellllll, stocking a bar), the guys still managed to keep a running commentary as gifts were opened. The host did an amazing job with little details- I never knew she was so crafty and talented! It was also fun to see the bride-and-groom-to-be interact throughout the night- sharing stories, just loving each other.

The traditional bridal shower was typical down to a T. But the maid of honor (one who actually did her job well) had everything done in such a classy way (with a little help from moi)- from the flowers to the favors it was all perfect. I can honestly say I have never seen the bride with such a big smile on her face. It was such a good feeling knowing I was part of making that smile appear.

A couple of things to note:

  • I grin like a fool when I am taking pictures. Yes, when I am behind the camera I still cheese with the best of them.
  • A Yankee Candle is not an acceptable gift to bring to a wedding shower- be a little more thoughtful- PLEASE!
  • Etsy has the BEST gift ideas for wedding showers. I swear, this is now my go-to spot for off the registry gifts (I usually try to give one registry and one thoughtful gift).
  • Champagne is a must for any shower- traditional or non-traditional. Who doesn’t love some bubbles?!
  • Whatever you do, make sure the bride is happy. If you notice her getting stressed out because her mom is driving her crazy, for goodness sake, step in!
  • Serve the cake while the gifts are being opened. It gives the guests something to do besides ooohhh and aaahhh.

That’s all I’ve got today. What are some great showers you’ve attended? Any tips?

A virtual high five- for me?!

26 Mar

Having gone from a lurker to a blogger less than two weeks ago, I am so thankful for already being welcomed into this community.  Amber from My Life in High Heels has welcomed me as a newbie blogger with a  Liebster Blog Award. The Liebster Blog Award is a blogger’s way of showing some love and connecting with other bloggers. Lots of love right back to you, Amber! Thank you!

With the award I post 11 facts about myself, answer 11 questions from Amber and nominate other bloggers with 200 followers or less. So here it goes…

11 facts about me

  1. I have a terrible Diet Coke addiction. I drink about two a day, one in the morning and one around lunchtime. Plus, I might drink another later depending on the day. Save me the lecture. I am trying to quit.
  2. I don’t drink coffee- never have. In a way, this might explain the Diet Coke addiction.
  3. I am the quintessential oldest child. I have a younger sister and a younger brother.
  4. I went to three different colleges plus took classes one summer at a community college when I came home to work. I ended up graduating from the University of Florida.
  5. I am a HUGE college sports fan. Go Gators!
  6. My dad is a police officer and my mom works in a pediatrician’s office. Talk about growing up as an American cliche.
  7. I live alone in an apartment in South Boston. This is not an invitation to stalkers.
  8. I love my Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I hate driving. I feel safer being in a bigger car despite the sick feeling I get when I have to pay for gas to fill it up.
  9. Luckily, I only have to fill up my Jeep a couple of times a month. I only drive once or twice a week because I can either take the bus, train or walk everywhere.
  10. I read all the time- on the bus, at lunch, waiting in doctor’s offices… ALL.THE.TIME. I have been known to plow through an entire book before I go to sleep at night.
  11. My best friend lives in NYC, but I see her more often than some friends who only live a 15 minute drive away. I’m lucky like that.

Questions from Amber

  1. Why did you start blogging? You know, I have no specific reason for why I started blogging. My friends have told me for years I should write, but I am sure all bloggers heard that over time. I just was lurking one day and decided I wanted to join in the fun. Why not?
  2. How long have you been blogging? Two weeks ago Thursday and have loved it since Day One!
  3. Where is your dream vacation spot? I don’t exactly have a dream vacation spot, but wherever it is has a lot of sunshine, cool drinks and absolutely no distractions from a day of doing nothing.
  4. If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why? I would love to have dinner with my mom’s dad. He passed away when she was young and I have heard so much about him from her and my grandmother. I would love to have the chance to know him myself.
  5.  What is the best gift you have ever been given? The gift of life! I thank my parents for giving birth to me almost 30 years ago. Just kidding 😉 That was my out for not having a better answer.
  6. What is something that is on your bucket list? I definitely want to have children. Does that count as something on a bucket list? I told my boyfriend when we first started dating that no matter our situation, when I am 35 I am going to figure out a way to be a mom. I am surprised he stuck around after that proclamation.
  7. What is your favorite thing to look at on Pinterest? I love looking at recipes. Sometimes I even make them.
  8. What is your favorite movie? Gone with the Wind is probably my favorite movie. I am not a big movie buff, but do enjoy curling up on the couch and watching them or going to the theater on my own for a bit of escape.
  9. What is your dream job? I think my dream job would be to be a teacher. It started out my dream job and then I got off track. Down the road, it might still happen.
  10. Night out or night in? I love both! Nothing beats a nice, long dinner with a bottle of wine with my boyfriend or a group of friends. Well, maybe a night in with those same people and the same bottle of wine would beat it!
  11. Where were you born? I was born in America’s hometown… and yes, people do hold protests during the Thanksgiving Day Parade.
